Overview

Arterial and Venous Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that evaluates blood flow in the arteries and veins. It helps detect conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral artery disease (PAD), varicose veins, and blood clots.

Procedure Breakdown:

  1. Preparation:
    • No special preparation is required.
    • Patients may be asked to wear loose clothing and remove accessories near the examined area.
  2. Gel Application:
    • A water-based gel is applied to the skin to enhance sound wave transmission.
  3. Ultrasound Imaging:
    • A handheld transducer is moved over the examined arteries or veins, typically in the legs, arms, or abdomen.
    • The technician may apply slight pressure to assess vein compressibility and detect clots.
  4. Blood Flow Assessment:
    • Doppler ultrasound measures blood flow speed and direction.
    • It helps identify blockages, narrowing, or blood clots in veins and arteries.
  5. Completion & Results:
    • The gel is wiped off, and the procedure is completed in about 30–45 minutes.
    • A vascular specialist reviews the findings and sends results to the referring doctor.
